Positive Affirmations

Are you depressed? Are you feeling bad about yourself? You have come to the right post!

Positive Affirmations are positive statements that are true. They become reality once you have accepted them. Positive Affirmations can be very helpful once the person using them has let go of the negative thoughts surrounding that affirmation. They work through repetition and looking at yourself in the mirror.

Try looking in the mirror and saying something positive about yourself. There are some affirmations pictured above to help you get started. I say a positive affirmation each day; once in the morning and once before bed.

Anxiety: How Can I Help Myself?

Have you ever been anxious? I have! It feels like an elephant sitting on my chest while my heart is trying to pump itself right out of my chest. My thoughts go a mile a minute and I get sweaty. I can’t focus on anything but I try to focus on everything!

Being anxious doesn’t feel good. But, I have news for you! You are bigger than your anxiety. That means you have the power to control it!

Not easy? I know. Here are some of things I try when I am anxious…

  1. Picture people I care about.
  2. Meditation music/guided imagery
  3. Journaling
  4. Cold water on my face
  5. Repeat the Serenity Prayer (written below)
  6. Say a positive affirmation (This is only a feeling. I can get through this)
  7. Tangle

Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

Most people think that when they begin to hit a therapeutic level with medicines and feel really good, that they are recovered.

This is not true. Even with medicine and talk therapy you can still go into depression and experience anxiety. The depression level shouldn’t be as low and the anxiety should feel less intense. But, you are not cured. Please do not stop seeing your doctors or taking medication as prescribed even if you are feeling better!

Don’t Let Fear put you in a Cage

Do you have a crippling fear? One caused by anxiety or depression? Does this fear hold you back from doing the things you like to do?

I think anxiety and depression cause fear, irrational or not, for many. I know that for me anxiety and depression have given me multiple fears. I am scared that people will not like me. I am scared that if I go out on a Sunday night I won’t get enough rest for the upcoming week. I am scared of what people will think of me if I don’t do what pleases them.

Five things to help YOU get out of the Cage:

1. Don’t compare yourself to others.

2. Use your bed for sleep and sex ONLY!

3. Tell people how you feel when you are asked.

4. Watch less TV.

5. Focus on what you CAN control; not on what you can’t.

These five things are NOT easy. I have not accomplished all five successfully. But, guess what? That’s okay. I am trying to accomplish one thing at a time. Once thing is mastered, you can move onto the next!

Soul and Body Try to Mend

Last night, I went to get a massage. Tonight, I am going to get my hair cut and colored. Now if you are anything like me, you are thing “Wow! That’s a lot of money to spend on yourself!” Well, I am here to tell you that it was necessary.

We all need to spend time with themselves caring for themselves. Self care can look different for everyone. For me, it’s getting my hair done, going to the gym, taking a bubble bath, etc.

What does this have to do with anxiety and depression? Everything! When I’m depressed or have high anxiety; the last thing I think about doing is getting out of bed to care for myself. What about you?

Spend some time with yourself on yourself!

I Must Confess…

I have to confess something today… I am feeling sad. I have no reason to be sad. Luckily, I know that having this feeling is okay. Do you ever feel some way but have no reason for feeling that way? It is more common than you think! I am using gratitude journal to express all the things and people I am grateful for. This may seem like an easy task but when you are down and out it is hard to find the good in the things you usually find good in.

Anxiety: My Story

I have been dealing with anxiety my entire life. What is anxiety? It’s many things. I have been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety disorder. This form of anxiety causes me to worry about many things for an extended period of time. It also causes headaches, muscle tension, upset stomach, and some other physical symptoms.

I spend a lot of time over-analyzing and worrying about things that are both out of my control and few that are in my control. I have been learning coping strategies to help me with these worries. I journal, blog, and Instagram as form of release. I also use fidget toys when I can’t concentrate from all the worries. I have a stress ball, tangle, and sensory bracelet. Please comment if you would like to learn other ways to cope.

I’m So Excited…

Yesterday, was a fabulous day. I participated in psycho education in the morning. I went to dinner and did some shopping with my best friend and her twin daughters. I am truly grateful for the great days that I have because before you know it something happens and my anxiety or depression will kick into high gear. I really try to inhale the good things everyday but on great days I inhale even more.

The reason I am so excited is because I just recieved the proofs for my wedding invitations through email. The front of the invitation is shown below. My fiance and I are getting married in July. We have 86 days until we say “I do.”

I’ve got Ants in my Pants…

I have found that with anxiety comes restlessness. To an outsider, it probably looks like I can’t get comfortable no matter where I am. For me, the person experiencing the restlessness, I feel like I am constantly moving. I can’t sit or lay still. It’s like I have ants in my pants. With experience, I have learned that I am less restless with medication(prescribed by a doctor). I also use fidgets (a sensory or tangle) so I can move without being a distraction to others.

My Story.

Have you ever been so sad it was debilitating? I have. The difference between this and depression is you feel this way everyday.

I have been dealing with depression for a few months. There are days where I don’t want to get out of bed. I don’t want to eat or get dressed. I just want to lay in bed all day with Netflix and cry. Sometimes there’s a reason for this; like something bad happened or I’m so anxious that I fall into a depression. Other days, there is no reason. I just feel sad and hopeless for no reason.

I have been learning how to cope with depression through classes at Sheppard Pratt and through some self help books that are extremely inspiring.

I have so enjoyed reading these. They have inspired me to change my life. They really focus on following your passion. I am fulfilling that by writing this blog, volunteering in the community, and working on my Masters in Counseling.

I work through my days with depression by trying to get up and do something. Somedays, just brushing my teeth is a struggle. But, it’s a struggle that helps me to refocus my mind. Refocusing your mind on a task, any healthy task, will help to relieve the harsh reality of depression.
